Gao Linhao’s expression gradually shifted from a daze to surprise. In the end, he said in disbelief, “What on earth is going on?!!!! I don’t believe it! Lan-ge, do you not love me anymore?!”

He was so agitated that he actually sprayed spit.

Anyone who didn’t know better might actually think he and Fei Lan had something going on.

“Get lost.” Fei Lan laughed. He pulled a strip of tape from under the desk, casually wrapped it around his hand twice, and threw it to Gao Linhao. The loop was exactly twice the size of the one on Ye Lingwei’s finger. Gao Linhao found the size was just about right and happily put it on.

Ye Lingwei, who had watched the whole scene: “…”

He effortlessly took the ring off his finger and placed it onto Gao Linhao’s desk. “Take it.”

“I don’t want it.” Gao Linhao said without even lifting his head, “Isn’t this what Lan-ge gave you?”

Ye Lingwei found it a bit amusing. “Who said it was given to me?”

Ye Lingwei didn’t look at the ring that had already been tossed onto Gao Linhao’s desk. Propping his chin in his hand, he nonchalantly said, “If a ring doesn’t have a 10-plus carat South African diamond1In Chinese pop culture/novels, specifying a diamond is from South Africa is a common shorthand for “top tier luxury.” with FL clarity2Stands for “Flawless.” It’s the highest, rarest grade, possessing zero visible inclusions or surface blemishes when examined by a skilled grader under 10x magnification., can you really call it a ring?”

Gao Linhao didn’t understand that stuff. He mumbled awkwardly, “Even though I’m dirt poor, I still know what a 10-plus carat diamond represents. However, I want to know, how big is it?”

He drew a circle with his fingers. “Is it this big?”

Looking at Ye Lingwei’s expression as he spoke, Gao Linhao almost felt that as long as Ye Lingwei wanted it, there were definitely people willing to buy him a diamond as big as a fist. If he had the money, he would buy one too—but he wanted to buy a few Honor of Kings skins first.

The fist-sized diamond was just Gao Linhao’s imagination. His cousin complained that her five-carat pigeon egg was too heavy, so wouldn’t ten-plus carats be the size of a fist? Don’t fists come in big and small sizes too?

Ye Lingwei didn’t know either; he just said it casually.

The higher a diamond’s clarity, the better the color, and the more expensive the price. The heavier the carat weight, the relatively higher the collectible value. A ten-plus carat diamond with the highest clarity can already be categorized as a collectible item, many foreign royal families have their own diamond collections.

“What are you guys chatting about?” Xiao Chengzi hopped over, giggling. Gao Linhao rolled his eyes dramatically right in front of her. Why hadn’t he noticed before that she held grudges so lightly?

Didn’t she see that Ye Lingwei wasn’t even paying attention to her?

Ye Lingwei listened to the voices in his ear and yawned. He had actually forgotten who this was. There were too many characters in the book; just remembering the main ones felt like it consumed a lot of energy, so he really didn’t have the energy to remember anyone outside the main story.

This girl, Xiao Chengzi—the author hadn’t given her a single line in the book.

    “What is this?”

“Hey, wait—” No matter how sharp-eyed and quick-handed Gao Linhao was, he was still a step slower than Xiao Chengzi. The girl had already snatched the tiny ring from his desk.

Xiao Chengzi lowered her head and tried to slide the ring onto her finger. When holding ring-like objects, most people’s first thought is to put it on the ring finger. Xiao Chengzi found it wouldn’t fit her ring finger so she switched to the slightly thinner pinky finger, but it still didn’t work.

She put the ring back, muttering, “It’s so small, who could possibly wear this?”

Gao Linhao proudly raised his head. “It’s Ye Lingwei. The fact that you can’t put it on only proves that your hands are thick.”

    Ye Lingwei: “…”

Watching Xiao Chengzi’s face drop in an instant, Ye Lingwei really wanted to say that Gao Linhao’s mouth is absolutely savage.

Not only did he step on someone else, he also lifted him up.

His talent for helping others offend people is top-notch.

Hearing Gao Linhao’s words, Xiao Chengzi looked down at Ye Lingwei’s fingers resting on the desk. She hadn’t noticed before that Ye Lingwei’s fingers were truly thin and well-proportioned. She couldn’t find a suitable adjective for a moment and only two words popped into her mind: Stunningly beautiful.

They looked just like tender shoots newly sprouting from willow branches in spring—soft, slender, and fragile.

She quietly glanced at her own fingers again. After comparing, she had to admit that her fingers were indeed just a tiny bit thicker.

However, she still retorted stubbornly, “They’re still thinner than yours! Your fingers look like radishes.”

Gao Linhao grinned. “I don’t care. Lan-ge made one that fits me. I have one, and you don’t, hehehe.”

His smug, trollish expression was simply too much to bear looking at.

Xiao Chengzi was so angry her face turned bright red. She wasn’t usually someone who got angry easily, but as luck would have it, every time she ran into Gao Linhao, she would get so furious that she couldn’t say a word.

Ye Lingwei reminded Gao Linhao softly, “Alright, she’s a girl, after all.”

This wasn’t the first time Ye Lingwei had stuck up for Xiao Chengzi.

Gao Linhao nudged Ye Lingwei discontentedly, while Fei Lan lifted his gaze and swept his eyes over the girl standing beside Ye Lingwei’s desk.

Big eyes, two long braids, a round face with a few small moles. Objectively speaking, it was a very likeable, cute appearance.

Does he like this type? Fei Lan looked toward Ye Lingwei.

    No.

The thought was suppressed as soon as it surfaced. Although the current Ye Lingwei was temperamental and hard to figure out, Fei Lan could still mostly guess what was on his mind.

For someone like Ye Lingwei, defending others was just a whim. It was honestly hard to imagine what he would look like falling in love.

It’s better not to get into puppy love.

If even Gao Linhao knew this was the second time Ye Lingwei had defended Xiao Chengzi, Xiao Chengzi naturally knew it herself. She also recalled the slight awkwardness Ye Lingwei had caused her last time. She looked at Ye Lingwei; from this angle, she could only see the tip of the boy’s nose and his eyelashes sweeping down from time to time like a small fan.

    So handsome…

She gazed at Ye Lingwei, almost lost in a trance.

However, she soon sensed a gaze landing on her—neither heavy nor light. It felt a bit chilly. She looked up in confusion toward where the gaze came from, but only saw Fei Lan with his head down, swiping on his phone.

The parent-teacher meeting was being held in their own classroom. Classmates trickled in one after another, bringing one of their parents. Of course, there were also those with both parents present.

Ye Lingwei sat in his seat, watching Gao Linhao lead an extremely beautiful woman in from the doorway. Just as Gao Linhao had wished, the woman wore a long floral dress and black high heels, holding a wallet and phone in her hand. Ye Lingwei truly found it hard to imagine the scene Gao Linhao had described of his mother chasing him down to beat him.

    He just couldn’t picture it.

Gao Linhao had never been this well-behaved in class. His mom sat in his seat while he stood to the side. Although his mind was racing with thoughts like, Holy crap, whose dad is that? He’s so handsome—Is that Xiao Chengzi’s mom? They don’t look alike at all, Gao Linhao didn’t show any of it.

He could only lower his head to hide the shocked expression he couldn’t suppress. The moment he looked down, he saw Ye Lingwei staring right at him.

Gao Linhao blushed. “What are you looking at?”

“Your mom is really beautiful.” Ye Lingwei wasn’t stingy with his praise, and he looked extremely sincere.

Ye Lingwei’s voice wasn’t quiet. When Lin Shuang heard it, she turned her head to look over. In that instant, she felt like she was blinded by this boy—he was excessively good-looking. Even at such a close distance, she couldn’t see a single flaw on his face.

Being praised by such a beautiful person, Lin Shuang was in a great mood.

“You are super good-looking too, you know.” Lin Shuang looked up at her own son, only to be choked by his rough and crude aura. It was her fault; she had married a hoodlum. She had hoped her son would take after her, but as it turned out, he was the spitting image of his dad.

Lin Shuang forced a smile. “Gao Linhao, is this your friend?”

Gao Linhao felt a surge of pride and nodded vigorously. “Yeah, my friend!”

In an instant, Lin Shuang determined who held the upper hand between the two. Without a doubt, her son was a licking dog3This is extremely common Chinese internet slang for someone who abandons their dignity to please someone else (usually a crush or superior)..

She almost forgot. Although Gao Linhao didn’t look much like her, when it came to being a dog face4This is slang for someone who is shallow or easily swayed by physical beauty., he took after her ten out of ten.

Lin Shuang revealed a warm smile toward Ye Lingwei. “My son isn’t very smart. It must be hard work dealing with him. It was quite hard for Fei Lan too, when he used to hang out with him back then.”

    Gao Linhao: “??????”

Gao Linhao swore that with Fei Lan, he absolutely wasn’t just after his looks; it was because Brother Lan had saved the weak, helpless, and pitiful him back then.

Ye Lingwei smiled and said, “Not at all, Gao Linhao is a very good person.”

Lin Shuang nodded, and her expression looked very relieved.

Actually, she sighed in her heart. How tragic. Her son just got the ‘good person card.’

After Pokémon entered holding a thick stack of materials, the classroom quieted down. In terms of age, Pokémon still had to address his students’ parents as ‘Ge’ or ‘Jie’; and for those who had children late in life, Pokémon even had to call them ‘Uncle’ or ‘Aunt.’

“Here is an analysis of the students’ grades—strengths and weaknesses, improvements and regressions—as well as short-term goals set for everyone based on their current results. Class monitor, please help distribute these. Parents, please take a look; if you have any suggestions, feel free to raise them.”

Lin Chudong was the class monitor. As he walked toward the podium, parents began whispering.

“Is he still your class monitor?”

“What else did you expect? He’s first in the grade, so of course he’s still the class monitor.”

“What a truly good kid,” a certain parent said, then glared at their son standing next to them, who was still fiddling with his hair. “Now look at you!”

    “…”

“Why are you tugging at me? You try getting first place then. I told you long ago that coming to No. 3 High, I wouldn’t be able to be number one.”

    “…”

Li Lan, sitting in Lin Chudong’s seat, heard these kinds of exchanges and revealed a proud smile.

This was her son. Everyone envied her for having such an excellent son. This was the greatest achievement of her life and her most successful work.

Lin Chudong handed them out sheet by sheet. When he reached Ye Lingwei, he placed the page gently onto Ye Lingwei’s desk.

Ye Lingwei was playing a mini-game; he couldn’t even be bothered to lift his head, offering a perfunctory thanks.

A spot in Lin Chudong’s heart felt like it had been pricked by a needle. He stiffly said you’re welcome, then turned around to distribute to the others.

Only after he left did Ye Lingwei look up. He straightened the summary Pokémon had prepared, but after seeing the short-term goals Pokémon had set for him, his face instantly fell.

    Student: Ye Lingwei

Short-term life goals: Eat well, get along with classmates.

Short-term academic goals: Rank 700 in the grade.

    What is this?

This is underestimating him too much. Although Ye Lingwei didn’t plan to take first place on the very first exam—that would be too abrupt, and aside from people thinking he cheated, it wouldn’t serve any purpose.

He wanted to climb up step by step. He wanted to watch the people ahead of him live in constant fear and worry day and night, watching their helplessness as they were overtaken by him. He wanted to watch Lin Chudong at the peak, not feeling the lonely chill of the summit, but instead feeling a thick and intense sense of impending crisis.

Watching helplessly as one is subjected to death by a thousand cuts is the cruelest thing. A single fatal blow is actually no fun at all.

However, rank 700 is just too pathetic.

Fei Lan looked at the ‘Rank 300’ on the paper and shifted his gaze away indifferently. He turned his head only to see Ye Lingwei with a long face and a little expression of indignation.

Fei Lan found it a bit amusing. The aisle between them was narrow, and combined with his good eyesight, he easily saw what Ye Lingwei’s goals were.

    —Eat well and Rank 700.

Each one was necessary for the current Ye Lingwei, and also something he could just about achieve.

What is he sulking about this time?

The parents’ attention was entirely focused on their own children; they had absolutely no interest in paying attention to other students. Fei Lan knocked on Ye Lingwei’s desk. “What? Can’t do it?”

Ye Lingwei frowned. “It’s too simple.”

    Too simple?

Fei Lan raised a brow and asked, “Yellow tangerines or green tangerines—which do you choose?”

Ye Lingwei said without a second thought, “Green.”

“What if the green one is really sour?”

“Green.” Ye Lingwei said faintly, “I don’t eat yellow fruit.”

    “…”

Fei Lan dropped his nonchalant expression. “Eating properly is already hard enough for you. Don’t be difficult.”

Ye Lingwei gave a lazy “oh.” By the looks of it, he definitely didn’t take it to heart.

He had been a picky eater since childhood; Fei Lan knew this well. It had just been a long time, and he had almost forgotten the other’s likes and dislikes, but this reminder brought it all back.

He wouldn’t eat okra or eggplant, nor any gourd vegetables, because the texture was like worms. He wouldn’t eat yellow fruits because he didn’t like the color yellow. Appearance mattered more than taste; if it looked good enough, Ye Lingwei might deign to take a bite, but if the presentation was ugly, he wouldn’t eat it no matter how good it tasted.

“What is yours?” Ye Lingwei was more interested in Fei Lan’s goals.

The section for life goals was blank. The academic goal was Rank 300. If he remembered correctly, last time Fei Lan placed somewhere in the 400s—slightly below the middle of the grade. He happened to overhear Pokémon mention it by accident last time.

Thinking about how Gao Linhao scored over 610 points yet was ranked in the 500s, being in the 400s probably meant Fei Lan didn’t score much higher than Gao Linhao. However, at the same time, one can imagine just how brutal the competition in these rankings is. Advancing by a hundred places is very difficult for students whose grades have already stabilized.

The closer you get to the top, the smaller the room for improvement and the greater the difficulty.

Ye Lingwei thought, It might be difficult for others, but for Fei Lan, it should be effortless.

The goal Pokémon set for him was actually being very conservative. Based on what Gao Linhao had revealed to him, Ye Lingwei guessed Pokémon probably wanted to directly set the goal of ‘First in Grade’ for Fei Lan.

It wasn’t that Fei Lan couldn’t do it; he just didn’t want to.

Ye Lingwei tilted his face up and let out a wow. “Rank 300, that’s amazing.”

The boy’s expression was very genuine. Fei Lan looked at Ye Lingwei for a moment, tossed the summary sheet back onto the desk, and said indifferently, “It’s nothing impressive.”

Ai Shu’s greatest wish in life was for Fei Lan to grow up and make something of himself. She had retired from the military, fallen out with her family to follow a businessman, and severed all ties with them for Fei Qiang’s sake.

Even so, Ai Shu still hoped that Fei Lan could contribute to the country in the future. She knew that being someone useful to the people and society wasn’t that simple. Since he was a child, Fei Lan had slowly begun to reveal certain traits specific to being Fei Qiang’s son: paranoid, extreme, and frighteningly intelligent.

Fortunately, Fei Lan loved his mother. For Ai Shu’s sake, he was willing to become a gentle person.

However, later, Ai Shu was gone. Fei Lan truly couldn’t find the meaning to work hard anymore. Originally, it was all done for Ai Shu to see; only if Ai Shu was happy could her health improve.

Fei Qiang and Jiang Hui’s actions were a fatal blow to Ai Shu, rendering Fei Lan’s efforts completely worthless by comparison.

In that case, he might as well let things slide and do whatever he pleased.

Even hearing Ye Lingwei say that’s amazing, Fei Lan remained unmoved. He no longer had the desire to work hard or change for anyone.

Moreover, Fei Lan saw at a glance that Ye Lingwei was faking it. Others might not find it obvious, but Fei Lan understood him well enough—how could he be this fake?

Some parents were very curious about how their children were doing in school; even Lin Shuang, who looked like she didn’t care, rushed up to the podium and squeezed into the crowd.

Of course, Pokémon couldn’t discuss the students’ situations right in front of everyone, and time didn’t permit speaking to them one by one. However, for the few students whose grades had dropped drastically, Pokémon still planned to have private chats with their parents.

Everyone had rushed to the podium. Although Gao Linhao followed behind his mom with a look of pure reluctance, from his shifting eyes and the fidgety way his hands picked at everything, it was obvious that he really wanted to know what Pokémon would say to Lin Shuang, and he was nervous.

Only Fei Lan and Ye Lingwei—the two students without parents present—were left in the back.

Seeing that no one was around, Ye Lingwei sat in Gao Linhao’s seat. He nudged Fei Lan and asked him, “Were you really amazing in the past?”

As soon as he said it, Ye Lingwei felt he had exposed himself. It was Gao Linhao who had told him about Fei Lan’s past; asking like this was basically throwing Gao Linhao under the bus.

However, he then thought that they knew each other as children so it could barely pass as a plausible explanation.

Fei Lan paused for a second. The past?

“Why do you ask?” Fei Lan chuckled. Why did it sound as if he had forgotten everything about their childhood?

However, come to think of it, aside from knowing each other in elementary school, he and Ye Lingwei hadn’t even seen each other during middle school, so it was normal that he didn’t know.

Ye Lingwei lay his head on the desk, his gaze resting on the back of Fei Lan’s neck. He slowly said, “I remember you used to be amazing.”

Fei Lan leaned against Gao Linhao’s desk, idly spinning a pen in his hand. He asked, “What are you trying to say?”

Ye Lingwei didn’t answer immediately. He was well aware that Fei Lan’s current situation had everything to do with the original host’s mother. He was Jiang Hui’s son; even though the two of them seemed to have tacitly reached a truce, he had no standing to say those high-sounding, self-righteous words.

He should just keep his mouth shut; maybe Fei Lan would figure it out on his own sooner or later.

“Aaaaaah Mom, Mom, Mom! Dearest Mom, Mom, Mom! You have to understand, that was just an accident! Next time, next time I’ll definitely do well!”

Gao Linhao’s heart-rending screams came from the podium at the front. Ye Lingwei lifted his head from the desk. Before his eyes could even locate Gao Linhao’s figure, a folder came flying straight at his face.

Ye Lingwei squeezed his eyes shut instinctively. Immediately, he felt a hand palm the side of his head and gave a gentle push. The folder smashed past—he didn’t know where it hit—and fell to the floor.

Ye Lingwei let out a breath of relief and slowly opened his eyes, only to see the back of Fei Lan’s head.

He was stunned for a second or two. Had Fei Lan pushed him behind his own back?

The folder landed right under Gao Linhao’s desk. Presumably, that dull thud was the sound of it hitting Fei Lan’s shoulder. If Fei Lan had dodged, or if Fei Lan hadn’t given Ye Lingwei that push, the folder would have most likely smashed into Ye Lingwei’s face.

Ye Lingwei looked down at the folder. To summarize the students’ situations clearly and at a glance, Pokémon had meticulously prepared a personal folder for every student and wrote their names on them.

On this folder, the three big characters for ‘Gao Linhao’ were exceptionally conspicuous.

Fei Lan wasn’t angry. After not hearing any movement from the person behind him for a while, he turned his head to glance over, only to find the other staring at the folder on the ground in surprise.

    “Whoa…”

    Fei Lan: “…”

Fei Lan frowned and asked Ye Lingwei somewhat coldly, “Are you a white-eyed wolf?”

The other person rarely had such a cold tone. Ye Lingwei looked up at him; from his angle, he could only see Fei Lan’s side profile. When Fei Lan wasn’t smiling, it made one feel a bit unsettled.

Ye Lingwei felt he was no exception, but he was someone who knew which way the wind blew. If the other person is unhappy, just coax him a bit.

“Thank you, Gege,” Ye Lingwei whispered. When he didn’t hear Fei Lan speak, his courage grew. He stood up and leaned over, pinching Fei Lan’s chin with one hand, without using much force.

Fei Lan raised his eyes slightly, looking at Ye Lingwei.

“If you don’t mind, I can repay you with my body,” Ye Lingwei said softly. His voice was very light, and his tongue barely moved between his teeth. The tip of his tongue was small; set off by two rows of pearly white teeth, it looked crimson.

Fei Lan swatted Ye Lingwei’s hand away, withdrawing his gaze from Ye Lingwei’s face. However, his expression wasn’t as cold anymore. He chuckled. “Little white-eyed wolf.”

After Ye Lingwei finished coaxing Fei Lan, his attention shifted entirely to the grand drama of Gao Linhao getting beaten up.

Lin Chudong stood at the podium, taking in all of their intimate interaction right before his eyes. His fists slowly clenched. Fei Lan had lied to him; how could they look like brothers acting like that? Realizing this, Lin Chudong felt nothing but a chill running through him from head to toe.

What Ye Lingwei had casually predicted really came true. Lin Shuang took off her high heels and caught up to Gao Linhao in a few steps. Gao Linhao was screaming wildly, but he didn’t dare make his movements too aggressive. With his size, breaking free would have been effortless, but his dad had told him that when they were outside, he had to give his mom a face.

Giving face meant that a 1.8-meter tall guy like him got his ear twisted and his butt kicked.

“You still dare to lie to Lao Niang5Literally “Old Mother.” When a woman refers to herself this way in an argument, it’s aggressive, sassy, and establishes dominance. that you improved?”

“I think you have a death wish!”

“Just keep learning from your dad, and go be a hoodlum in the future too!”

Gao Linhao’s dad opened a small money-lending company. The company has a dedicated group of debt collectors; if civil means don’t work, they resort to force. Lin Shuang often curses him out as a ‘hooligan boss.’

Gao Linhao grinned cheekily. “Don’t air the family’s dirty laundry6A traditional idiom meaning family scandals or embarrassing matters should not be discussed outside the home., my mom.”

Seeing his ‘dead pig doesn’t fear boiling water7A colorful idiom for someone who is completely thick-skinned, shameless, or resigned to their fate.’ attitude, Lin Shuang got even angrier. She applied more force with her hands and roared, “Who is your mom?!”

    “I am, I am.”

“No no no, you are, you are.”

Several parents went over to mediate, and Pokémon was also on the side trying to break up the fight; the classroom instantly turned into a pot of porridge8An idiom describing complete chaos, disorder, and mess..

Ye Lingwei still found it amusing, but as he withdrew his gaze, he saw Li Lan standing beside him and Fei Lan.

The relaxed and comfortable expression on Ye Lingwei’s face vanished. He looked up and asked with a face full of innocence, “Teacher Li, do you need something?”

“If you have no business here, move aside; you’re blocking me.”

Fei Lan glanced at Li Lan, whose face had turned an ashen green. Looking for trouble with Ye Lingwei required a constitution stronger than the average person. Otherwise, one slip-up and they could literally die of anger.

Ye Lingwei simply wouldn’t curb his temper just because of who you were.

Lin Chudong saw how close Ye Lingwei and Fei Lan were while talking. Following Lin Chudong’s despondent gaze, Li Lan saw the exact same scene.

    She had finally caught them.

Li Lan wasn’t just excited; she was thrilled. She thought Ye Lingwei would be panic-stricken, yet the other party remained as calm and composed as ever—and just as infuriating.

“You and, you and Fei Lan, are you two engaging in puppy love?” Li Lan lowered her voice and asked sternly. She had looked quite like a benevolent mother today, but the moment she encountered Ye Lingwei, she began baring her fangs and brandishing her claws.

Few people around were paying attention to this side; everyone was watching Gao Linhao get beaten up. Lin Chudong came over, hesitated for a moment, then tugged at Li Lan’s clothes. “Mom, today is the parent-teacher meeting…”

Li Lan glared at Lin Chudong and snapped, “This is adult business, why are you interrupting? Have you studied all those books for nothing?”

Lin Chudong withdrew his hand in embarrassment, looking at Ye Lingwei with worry.

Ye Lingwei propped his chin in his palm. “He’s my gege. If you don’t believe me, ask him.”

    Brother?

Li Lan certainly wouldn’t believe his nonsense.

Ye Lingwei didn’t feel like he was lying. He wasn’t oblivious to the times Fei Lan had defended him, just as he was aware of the other’s initial indifference.

The bond the two shared from childhood still counted for something after all.

Fei Lan looked up, about to speak; whatever Ye Lingwei said, he would smooth it over.

However, before he could speak, a man appeared in the hallway, dressed in a suit with a stern expression. He lowered his gaze at Li Lan and coldly said, “I am his ge, Teacher. If you have something to say, you can say it to me.”

    A familiar voice.

Ye Lingwei tilted his face up and narrowed his eyes. Ye Cen’s expressionless face came into view.
