    5.

It rained frequently in July. On days when it rained without being in the forecast, they would scrap the planned outdoor location shoot and proceed with filming on set. Thanks to that, the filming of the opening sequence that Minje had been eagerly awaiting was pushed back again and had become indefinitely postponed long ago. Because of Director Im’s insistence on capturing a real sunset glow instead of using lights, they were waiting for a day that was not only rainless but also not cloudy.

Choi Wonoh spent far less time at the shared house than expected. Even on the first day, he ended up drinking and had to be dragged back to Seoul by his manager late at night, making Minje wonder if he was even sleeping properly.

Minje was getting his hair touched up while flipping through the script. The trials and crises he had imagined were probably just needless worries. A series of peaceful days continued where he would wake up, go to the set, wait all day, shoot a few scenes, and then wait again.

“Hyung. What are you shooting right now?”

Just then, Wonoh squeezed his large frame into the makeup room. It seemed Wonoh, who had a schedule that morning, had just returned to the set. By now, they had grown accustomed to looking for each other first on set.

“Did your interview go well? They said they were shooting 13—3, but I’m not sure if they’re done.”

    “Yeah.”

Wonoh’s face looked tired as he sank his body into the empty sofa behind the makeup vanity. He had mentioned an interview, and Minje vaguely guessed it was probably because of the exclusive article that came out yesterday. That article had made Director Im get irritated as hell yesterday, having to take calls from all over the place in the middle of filming. There had been a brief commotion, but Minje hadn’t bothered to look up the article. It was a habit he had built up since his idol days. Nothing good ever came from looking up articles or reactions.

    “You look tired.”

    “The interview was really annoying.”

“Well, all interviews are like that.”

“Looks like my hyung has done a few interviews.”

Wonoh erased the tired expression from his face and grinned at Minje through the mirror. For a moment, Minje froze, thinking he had misspoken, but then the makeup room door burst open and Director Im came in, his hair a bird’s nest and still wearing a jacket that came down to his knees even in July.

“Hey, guys! Can someone call Wonoh’s manager…! Huh?! Wonoh, you’re here?”

Wonoh bowed his head in greeting to Director Im.

“Can you be ready in about 30 minutes? The rain just stopped, and the sky looks absolutely amazing. I want to shoot now.”

“I came with my makeup off, so I just need to put on the clothes. 10 minutes.”

“Wow, Choi Wonoh, my savior. But it’ll take at least 30 more minutes to set up. Take your time and come out.”

Yes, Minje and Wonoh answered at the same time, and the two of them slipped on the school uniform shirts for the opening scene that the wardrobe team had hastily brought.

Minje put on the short-sleeved uniform shirt over his t-shirt, leaving the front completely unbuttoned, and looked at his reflection in the full-length mirror. Since he was playing a high school student and Director Im didn’t like made-up faces, he was practically bare-faced. His hair was also styled naturally, just enough to not look too messy.

Minje stole a glance at Wonoh, who was wearing the same uniform shirt. Standing right next to him was Choi Wonoh, looking exactly as he did in the opening sequence he had watched until it was worn out.

Naturally, he was reminded of the time he first watched <Round and Round Youth> in his past life.

Back then, Minje hadn’t intentionally sought out his movie. To be honest, he didn’t even know the title; he just bought a ticket for the very last showtime. That was the only thing he could do as he pleased in his depressing and stifling life. Going to the movie theater, a 10-minute walk from the dorm he used alone, and watching a movie by himself. At the time, it was Minje’s only hobby and a sort of small rebellion. Something he had never told anyone about.

That day, too, Minje had pulled his hat down low, even wearing a mask, and intentionally entered the theater 15 minutes after the movie had started. The commercials must have already ended, because the screen was filled with the back of a sanitation worker loading trash bags in an old, secluded alley. The rustling sound of him picking up the bags stimulated the ears, and the screen, bathed in the sunset, was dyed orange.

By the time he had quietly sat down in the back corner seat, the last of the opening credits were disappearing from the left corner of the screen. Soon, a stooped, shabby-looking grandmother appeared at the edge of the screen, holding a black plastic bag and starting to argue with the sanitation worker.

‘Just this once, I’m telling you.’, ‘I let you off so many times because you said that last time. I told you, you have to use the official volume-rate bags.’ While this conversation was going on, Minje was thinking, ‘What was the title of this movie again? Come to think of it, I bought the ticket without even looking at the title.’

Just then, the screen changed, and two figures, almost in silhouette, appeared. One of the two, who had been strolling along, strode forward toward the screen.

‘Hey, Grandma, Grandma. If you leave it, I’ll throw it out myself. Give it to me.’

Suddenly, the screen was filled with a youthful, handsome face. He kept glancing at the sanitation worker, who was looking at them disapprovingly, as he pulled his grandmother into the house. His cheek, bathed in the orange sunset, shone beautifully, and a golden band of sunset light was wrapped around the long arm that enveloped his grandmother’s back. It was Choi Wonoh.

The shock of seeing his makeup-free face and short black hair, which he had never shown during his idol activities, was immense. Minje gasped while still in his seat. Fortunately, the scattered audience members must have all been his fans, as his gasp was buried in the small, sporadic screams, and no one seemed to notice.

    “Cut!”

And now, Minje was watching the third take of that very scene on a monitor on set. The ground, wet in places from the rain that had just stopped, sparkled as it reflected the sunset, and Minje’s heart sparkled along with it.

“I don’t think we need to do any more. What do you think?”

    “I like it too.”

“Ah, I feel great. I really like it. Then let’s just get a close-up of Ms. Yeonja here!”

The opening was a scene where Minje’s face hardly appeared, but Minje sat blankly at the monitor table, watching the third take they had just filmed over and over again.

“Mr. Actor, we just filmed the opening. Please give us a word on your thoughts~!”

At that sound, he lifted his head and saw a girl wearing a cap. She was part of the making-of team that was always following the set, and though she was usually near Wonoh, it seemed she had come to film Minje for a change.

“Uh… I think Wonoh came out looking really beautiful.”
