Chapter 78  They won’t separate

Yu Xiaowen woke up in the morning. He blinked, and slowly climbed out of bed. He went straight toward the bathroom.

There was someone inside. He rubbed his eyes, and his consciousness started to return.

Lu Kongyun was inside. He brushed his teeth while facing the mirror. His face, neck, and messy hair were wet, he must have taken a shower. He only wore a pair of pajama pants and stood casually with his left hand supported the sink. His shoulder blades followed the line of his back muscles, and they rose into a slope covered by thick flesh.

He brushed carefully until he saw Yu Xiaowen through the mirror, and turned around.

“Mm. You’re awake?” He lowered his gaze to the marks that showed under the collar of Yu Xiaowen’s thick cotton T-shirt, then he looked back into his eyes. His voice carried a light softness from the morning. “Do you need to use the bathroom?”

“Not in a hurry. You go first.” Yu Xiaowen’s body moved stiffly to the side, and he stuck to the wall outside the bathroom like a gecko.

Lu Kongyun came out and stood in front of him.

His belt wasn’t fastened, so the waistband hung loose below his waistline. The thing inside that woke in the morning was slightly visible. But he didn’t care. He asked, “How does your body feel, do you feel any discomfort?”

“…No.” Yu Xiaowen looked left and right, and his eyes glanced down without intention.

Lu Kongyun noticed where he looked. He immediately pressed him against the wall with the thing he had been looking at, and he used both hands to touch certain spots that could make a person’s legs lose strength. “You’re still looking at me.”

He struggled. “I didn’t see anything! I need to pee!”

Lu Kongyun released him. Yu Xiaowen closed the door, finished urinating quickly, and flushed. He looked at the marks under his neck in the mirror and felt his head throb. Soon he would have to go to the bureau to pay respects to Lord Guan¹, and he would eat lunch with everyone later. He had to pick the shirt in his closet with the highest collar.

When he thought of that, last night’s scenes kept jumping out in his mind.

He covered his burning face, then he turned on the shower and stepped into the cubicle. ‎A moment later, he heard the door slide open, and someone hugged him from behind. He inhaled and turned around. “Why did you come again… mm…”

“So that you won’t need to wash again later.”

The feeling of skin pressed together under hot water was strange. It perfectly filled every space between their bodies, as if every inch and every fraction had melted completely into one under the flowing heat. Yu Xiaowen watched the small pool of water that formed between their chests. Because of the rhythm of their movement, the sound of the dripping water grew higher and lower.

When Lu Kongyun breathed the heaviest, he moved harder, and the small pool collapsed. Scalding water splashed down.

Yu Xiaowen entered the bedroom and fell onto the bed again. “Oh my god.”

So this is what dating feels like?

Even though he was already tired, his weak Omega body was extremely sensitive. After being handled by an Alpha, it seemed like the feeling wouldn’t fade for a while. He curled up on the bed, held the blanket between his legs, and covered his still-teary eyes with the back of his hand until the remaining sensations finally faded.

He lowered his arm and found that Lu Kongyun had been watching him the whole time. He looked interested. It was hard to tell if he observed or studied him. In any case, he looked satisfied. Yu Xiaowen felt embarrassed and covered himself with the blanket. “What are you looking at? My body is just like this.”

Lu Kongyun didn’t answer. He opened the drawer of the small bedside table and took out two opened boxes, one with a new wristband and one with a new phone.

“When you go to the bureau, take both with you. I already put your old SIM card inside.”

Yu Xiaowen said, “…Stop spending money on me. I can buy things myself.”

“This one is the same as mine. You can’t buy it.” Doctor Lu buttoned his shirt as he spoke. “I’ll drive you to the police bureau later.”

“Don’t you need to go to work?” Yu Xiaowen said.

Doctor Lu’s hands paused. “There isn’t much to do this morning. I can go in the afternoon.”

Yu Xiaowen said, “Then you don’t need to take me. I can call a cab. When I come back, I can drive my old car back from the city bureau. Why do you need to give me a ride again? It’s too much trouble.”

Lu Kongyun came over and sat down. “Can’t I drive you to your workplace?”

“…It’s not that. I just feel like I trouble you too much,” Yu Xiaowen said. “I keep receiving favors, and it makes me feel awkward.”

“Then you should do things for me too,” Lu Kongyun said.

“Fine, then before I return to duty, I’ll drive you to work every day,” Yu Xiaowen said.

“No. Something else.”

Yu Xiaowen said, “Hm?”

“What I taught you last night.”

“…Fine.” Yu Xiaowen’s eyes drifted, and he agreed vaguely. “When I come back tonight, I’ll report my learning results to you.”

Lu Kongyun looked at him. He stayed silent.

Lu Kongyun touched his face and played with his lips. Yu Xiaowen noticed that the suspicious place reacted again.

“What’s wrong with you?!”

Doctor Lu didn’t sound completely justified, but he still explained. “An S-class Alpha who just got a partner will have a higher need. Yu Xiaowen realized that Lu Kongyun insisted on sending him there not just because he wanted to give him a ride.

Everyone strongly invited him to join the welcome lunch. Don’t bother worrying about it.”

Old Wang said, “Come on, I know. You said before you didn’t think about dating because you can’t get marked. But this time it’s different. That guy is one of us too, a prosecutor. After he watched the trial in court yesterday, he called me ten times through my second aunt. I told him your gland has some issues, but he still likes you. He said even if your body has problems, he still wants to get to know you and try. Also, a prosecutor and a policeman are a good match.”

Yu Xiaowen laughed. “Ha, damn. A prosecutor falling for the defendant in court? That’s some taste. Who is it?” He smiled, showing his teeth, and he wanted to ask more. Then he heard someone clear his throat beside him.

After that, Lu Kongyun looked like he had some throat problems. He pulled his collar loose without effort. A large area of messy purplish red marks and bite-like wounds showed on his gland.

The air went silent.

Actually, if Yu Xiaowen had kept a blank face, the rumor wouldn’t have landed on him. After all, connecting those two through that kind of link needed a strong imagination.

But his face turned red, and he panicked. He grabbed his head and almost crawled under the table. He completely provided proof for the fantasy.

So Old Wang looked at one, then looked at the other. To be safe, he shut his mouth. The Alpha colleagues who had wrapped arms around shoulders and urged drinks earlier started to act with clearer boundaries.

Yu Xiaowen guessed that maybe even last night, this man already had some plan, which was why he let him bite his gland.

After the meal, under everyone’s blessing and gossiping eyes, they got in the car.

Lu Kongyun held the steering wheel and looked at him. “You looked pretty interested. The profession suits you. Good taste. Doesn’t care that you can’t mark.”

Yu Xiaowen said, “Hey, I was just asking casually. I was curious. There aren’t many Alphas who don’t care about that, right?”

“Curious.” Lu Kongyun went quiet, and the car slowly stopped by the roadside.

Yu Xiaowen said, “Hm? Why did you stop the car?”

He looked outside the window.

Lu Kongyun turned his whole body toward him and looked at him.

“The ones who say they don’t care only say that because they don’t know you yet. Maybe after a few months, when they really fall in love, they’ll lock you in a basement and leave their scent on you every day so you won’t have a chance to go into heat for anyone else.”

Yu Xiaowen froze. His eyes showed some fear. “Are Alphas like that?”

Lu Kongyun said, “…I was only giving an example.”

Yu Xiaowen thought for a moment and scratched his cheek.

He asked quietly, “So you care a lot, right?”

“…No.” Lu Kongyun said, “That’s not what I meant.”

Yu Xiaowen looked at him.

After a while, he smiled lightly and said, “No matter what you think, I only love you. Even if we separate, I won’t go on blind dates.”

After thinking, Lu Kongyun held back his hand and placed it on Yu Xiaowen’s leg. “What do you mean, even if we separate? I said that’s not what I meant.”

Yu Xiaowen held his face. “I was only giving an example too. Of course I want to stay with you. Like we said yesterday. As long as you want it, I’ll follow you even to hell.”

He kissed his lips softly, then let go and sat back. “Let’s go. You still need to go to work.”

Outside the window, redberry flowers were falling along the street. Together with that kiss, they suddenly filled the missing part in Lu Kongyun’s scent memory over the past two years.

Lu Kongyun said, “These two years, every time I saw redberry flowers bloom, I thought of the scent of kissing you under the tree.”

Yu Xiaowen turned his head in surprise and met Lu Kongyun’s eyes.

Lu Kongyun said, “But when I saw them, I also thought you were dead.”

Yu Xiaowen inhaled. He put his hand on the back of Lu Kongyun’s hand and held it. At that moment, he suddenly felt guilty about what he said earlier about separating.

Even though he had meant it sincerely, as a blessing for Lu Kongyun to live a fuller life in the future, he suddenly realized that Lu Kongyun had always stayed in the same place, while he was the one who had changed his name and abandoned everything.

Because he lacked confidence in himself, he also didn’t give the other confidence. It must have been sad.

“The redberry flowers in Manjing are always blooming,” Lu Kongyun said.

“…” Yu Xiaowen unfastened his seat belt, leaned over, and hugged him.

He didn’t cry much before. He was rough and careless like a wild monkey. But whenever he was with Doctor Lu, there was always some kind of weakness. When Yu Xiaowen left the courthouse, he had thought that he would never cry again. No matter what happened, he was lucky, and he should accept every kind of relationship with gratitude and live happily.

But now he finally couldn’t hold it back.

Maybe instead of telling himself not to cry again, what he needed more was to cry his heart out like this.
