Because he had overslept and felt a little guilty, Liang Feng scratched his head and took the initiative to ask Fei Yuan, “Director Fei, what happens if we fail the clock-in task?”
Fei Yuan grinned. “You’ll lose one of the teachers who were going to teach you how to make things. Without a teacher’s guidance, whether you succeed or not will be entirely up to you.”
“No more talk—don’t waste time. Hurry up the mountain. It’ll be a shame if you miss the sunrise,” Fei Yuan said as he stepped aside. “Oh, one more tiny reminder. There are a few different paths in the trail going up. Not every path leads to the top, so don’t take the wrong one.”
【Oh my god, Fei Yuan is so evil—waking the guests up this early, throwing in different mountain paths, punishing them for failure… more please! I love this!】
【The kids are all still half-asleep, haha. But seriously, is it okay to go hiking without even having breakfast?】
【The mountain doesn’t look that tall, right? I mean, it doesn’t seem that bad. The crew wouldn’t make it that hard for the guests.】
【They’re off! Yan-ge charging ahead with Tudou in his arms—his stamina is amazing!】
The path up the mountain was a dirt trail. Although it had rained the day before yesterday, the sun from yesterday had dried most of it up. Only a few small puddles remained, and the road wasn’t hard to walk.
Yan Yushan turned on the flashlight on his phone and led the way. Xu Xishuang followed behind him, placing a hat on Tudou—now fully awake—to shield him from the chilly early spring breeze.
As they walked, the parents chatted casually. The topic quickly shifted from work to parenting. Liang Feng asked Xu Xishuang and Lu Rui with envy, “Raising your kids must be really easy, right? They’re so well-behaved. Unlike Pidan—if I take my eyes off him for even a second, he’s gone.”
Xu Xishuang glanced at Tudou, then turned to Liang Feng and said, “He is easy to take care of, but sometimes I feel like he’s too easy. I actually hope Tudou can loosen up a bit and enjoy his childhood more, instead of spending every day in an office.”
Yan Qingci looked up and said softly to Xu Xishuang, “But Daddy, I think reading contracts is more fun than playing games.”
Everyone else: …
【CEO Tudou, never change.】
【I can already see Tudou growing up to be a workaholic. Kinda scary. I think he inherited Yan-ge’s nonstop grind gene—Yan-ge used to work around the clock on shoots too, until he met baby Shuangshuang.】
【Xiao Lajiao is such a soft cutie. Girls should be a bit more quiet and gentle. I bet Xiao Lajiao is super easy to raise too.】
Lu Rui didn’t answer Liang Feng’s question right away. His expression turned a little awkward. “It’s… okay. A bit of trouble, but nothing major.”
The others were a bit puzzled, but seeing the expressions on Lu Rui and Bai Keke’s faces, they tactfully didn’t press further—leaving the audience, who got no explanation, practically scratching their heads in frustration.
Xiang Yao and Chen Yurou, both with experience and raising a second child, generously shared plenty of parenting tips. From how to communicate with kids to how to help them with homework without losing your temper. Not only were the other parents listening attentively, even the single folks in the chat were hooked.
The atmosphere was warm and relaxed, and no one felt tired until they reached the first different trails in the path. One of the trails clearly led downhill, so everyone unanimously ruled that one out. With Yan Yushan leading the group, they continued heading toward the mountaintop.
A few minutes later, they reached a second trail and came to a stop. Both paths looked like they led upward, and everyone hesitated.
Xiang Yao suggested, “Why don’t we split into two groups? If one of the paths turns out to be wrong, they can just turn back. Fei Yuan never said we all had to reach the top for the task to count, right? As long as one family gets there and sees the sunrise, it should be fine.”
Everyone agreed with Xiang Yao’s idea. The parents let the kids decide which way to go—Tudou and Pidan chose the left path, while Sijidou and Xiao Lajiao picked the right. Once the directions were set, both teams headed forward again.
But it didn’t take long before each team ran into yet another trail—and once again, they chose different paths to continue on.
【There are way too many forked paths for this to be a coincidence. It’s hard not to suspect Fei Yuan planned this.】
【Planned. The crew definitely planned this. They’re clearly trying to split everyone up!】
【Don’t tell me in the end, none of the families will manage to catch the sunrise? Fei Yuan wouldn’t be that evil, right?】
【Why does this episode feel like one giant casino…? Like, who picked the shorter path, who got the easier house task, who chose the right way up the mountain? It’s all luck-based!】
【Hmm… speaking of luck, does anyone remember that beach episode from two years ago on A Trip on a Whim? When the guests played Monopoly—wasn’t Xu Xishuang super lucky and totally crushed everyone?】
【Yes yes yes! I remember now! Every time Xu Xishuang rolled the dice, he landed on good tiles, raked in cash, no one had better luck than him!】
The chat shifted into a full-on discussion about Xu Xishuang’s luck. Many viewers didn’t believe it was anything mystical, thinking it was all coincidence. But others were convinced he was the “chosen one,” and the path he picked must be the right one.
The camera followed the guests as they made their way forward, capturing every tree and blade of grass along the trail, filming the families’ backs as they hiked up the mountain. More and more viewers were waking up, and the barrage of comments on screen kept flying, faster and livelier by the second.
Just half a minute before Fei Yuan was about to send a group message letting the guests know the sunrise was beginning, Xu Xishuang reached the mountaintop—hand in hand with Yan Yushan and Yan Qingci.
The morning mist hadn’t yet lifted, drifting on the wind through the deep green mountains. And then, the sun emerged from this vast expanse of rolling peaks and fog. In a haze of shifting light and shadow, it took only a moment for the sun’s golden rays to wash over everything. The white mist turned radiant and glowing, and as the sunlight intensified, it slowly dissipated, revealing lush green mountains and a great river winding through the valley.
Yan Qingci stared wide-eyed at the golden scene, his mouth slightly open in awe at the breathtaking sunrise. He tugged on Xu Xishuang’s hand and exclaimed happily, “Daddy, it’s golden!”
Xu Xishuang hadn’t seen such a magnificent sunrise in a long time. Smiling, he asked Yan Qingci, “Do you like it?”
“I love it!” Yan Qingci couldn’t help rising on his toes and bouncing in place with excitement. “I really love it!”
Hearing their exchange, Yan Yushan turned his head. He saw how the sunlight dusted Xu Xishuang’s profile with a golden shimmer, like warm jade trimmed with gold. Something stirred in his chest, and he leaned down to place a gentle kiss on Xu Xishuang’s cheek.
Xu Xishuang paused, turned his head, and met Yan Yushan’s gaze—filled with affection. He gave him a radiant smile, then relaxed into the crook of Yan Yushan’s arm, quietly taking in the sunrise.
【Ahhh it’s so beautiful! I swear, one day I have to watch a sunrise with someone I love!】
【Told you Xu Xishuang is the chosen one! The path he picked was the right one to the top!】
【Frantic screenshotting—I got the shot of Yan-ge kissing Shuangshuang, hehe! Kissing and making eye contact at the mountaintop at sunrise… so beautiful, so moving!】
【Is it really okay for you two to show off your love like this right in front of Tudou? Though, to be fair, Tudou was totally absorbed in the sunrise.】
【Even though the other families didn’t reach the summit, they still saw the sunrise along the way! Sometimes, even if you don’t choose the “right” path or reach the top, putting aside regret can still lead to beautiful views. It’s a journey worth taking.】
【The person above just took Fei Yuan’s clock-in task and gave it unexpected philosophical depth.】
With the sunrise task complete, the guests gradually made their way back down the mountain. They happened to meet again at a fork in the trail, sharing the sights they’d seen along the way as they walked back down together.
Sijidou and Pidan had already become good friends. They chatted about their favorite cartoons and the heroes in them. After being emotionally scarred by Yan Qingci’s earlier statement that “Ultraman doesn’t exist in the real world,” they both tactfully avoided bringing that topic up again.
Yan Qingci walked beside them, listening in and occasionally asking questions like what specific powers the heroes had. Sijidou and Pidan eagerly explained, while Xiao Lajiao quietly listened from the side, though she didn’t understand much.
Back in the village, the kids said goodbye to one another and headed back to their lodgings for breakfast.
Yan Qingci had long since outgrown needing to be fed. He ate the corn porridge Grandma had made with focused care, watching as she happily ate her pickled vegetables. Curious, he tried a bite of chili from the pickle jar. After silently swallowing it, he quietly moved the remaining peppers into Yan Yushan’s bowl and went back to his porridge.
Yan Yushan gave him an amused glance but didn’t say anything. Of course, the livestream chat wasn’t about to let it slide.
【Gagagaga CEO face turned red from the spice】
【Yan Qingci: Pretend nothing happened. Yan Yushan: Oh, so now I’m the food waste bin?】
【Hahaha help, “food waste bin” is killing me. My dad’s the leftover disposal unit at home too, lol. Is this what being a man in the house means?】
【I’ve already collected a bunch of blackmail photos of CEO Tudou—just waiting for him to grow up so I can send them to him, gagagaga】
After breakfast, Fei Yuan generously allowed the guests to take a short nap, then sent out a message to wake them up and have them follow the village master to start making goods that would be sold at the market tomorrow.
Everything was fresh and exciting for the kids. Sijidou and Pidan looked at the bamboo strips and wheat straw on the ground, picked some up to play with, and chirped away with questions for the kind-faced old man, asking what the materials were used for.
The old man spoke with a thick local accent, and none of the guests understood him. Fei Yuan, standing nearby, translated, “Here comes today’s second clock-in task! Under the master’s guidance, you’ll need to successfully weave either a bamboo basket or a straw hat using these materials!”
“You must produce a finished product in order to earn the right to go to the market tomorrow and help Grandpa sell these baskets and hats,” Fei Yuan said with a grin. “Please pay close attention—Grandpa’s getting on in years, he might get tired after just one round of teaching. And he’ll be going home for lunch, so you’ll need to remember the steps well if you want to keep going after the break.”
【What?! Only one demonstration? And who’s going to remember all the steps after lunch… Fei Yuan is so evil!】
【There’s no way they’re completing this task—unless one of the guests already knows how to weave a straw hat or bamboo basket, which seems super unlikely, right?】
The live chat was filled with anxious comments. On camera, after Fei Yuan finished explaining his clearly trap-laden rules to the guests, he turned to the old man and said something. The old man nodded, picked up a few pieces of wheat straw from the ground, and began demonstrating how to weave a straw hat.
The parents quickly grabbed some straw and tried to follow along. Liang Feng clumsily fumbled with his hands, completely unable to keep up—just like a panicked student trying to copy homework at the last minute. In desperation, he turned to his best buddy Yan Yushan for help… only to discover—
Yan Yushan was recording with his phone??
Yan Yushan was calmly filming the old man’s hat-weaving process. When he noticed Liang Feng’s dumbfounded expression, he raised an eyebrow and said, “Director Fei never said we couldn’t film it to watch later, did he? There’s no way anyone could memorize it all in one go.”
Liang Feng slowly nodded, then turned his gaze to Xu Xishuang—only to see that his fingers were flying. A rough outline of a straw hat had already taken shape in his hands. He was even faster than the old man!
Catching Liang Feng’s stunned expression, Xu Xishuang blinked and explained, “I learned a bit before. It’s pretty simple.”
Off to the side, Fei Yuan stared at the couple, visibly shaken: …Damn, Miscalculated!!
