Chapter 145 – Extra 6 – How Yao Wei Met Zeng Jingxuan 1
by Salted FishIt was still the same hospital room, but the companions were long gone. Zeng Jingxuan, Zhang Xiuqi, and even Wei Yang had left one after another, leaving only Yao Wei lying alone in the hospital bed. He could have also moved to a provincial hospital with better medical conditions, but for some reason, he just didn’t have the energy to go through the hassle. Of course, with most of his ribs broken, he really couldn’t move around much anyway.
Unable to sleep on his side and with nothing to watch on TV late at night, Yao Wei stared boredly at the ceiling, waiting for sleep to come. The most painful part of recuperating was the sheer boredom, which was even more torturous than the illness itself. Trying to ignore the dull pain in his chest, he found himself lost in thought. He wondered if the uncle and nephew had finished handling the funeral. Although he wasn’t very familiar with Sanliao Village, he knew that relocating the graves of a feng shui family like the Zeng Family wasn’t something that could be done quickly. He just hoped that after the funeral, Brother Xuan wouldn’t disappear again.
At this thought, Yao Wei couldn’t help but smile. No matter what, he had made the right decision to come. Although he was seriously injured and had lost several treasures, he had ultimately pulled that man out of a life-threatening situation. After all, he was quite skilled at reading people, and this time, it seemed Brother Xuan had truly softened. As long as he put in a little more effort, how could he let him slip away?
It was a pity that he had been too nervous during that stolen kiss and hadn’t even gotten a proper taste. What a waste… Just as he was secretly lamenting, the door to the hospital room suddenly opened. Reflexively, Yao Wei immediately closed his eyes, but after doing so, he realized something—what time was it? Nurses wouldn’t be making rounds at this hour, and they certainly wouldn’t allow visitors. So who could it be?
A name flashed in his mind, and Yao Wei immediately held his breath, pretending to be in a deep sleep. The footsteps were light, and if it weren’t for the quietness of the hospital at night, they might not have been noticeable at all. The person’s pace was also slow, taking nearly a minute to reach the bedside. However, upon arriving at the bed, the person stopped, neither attempting to wake him nor making any other movements. They simply stood there quietly, as if observing the person lying in the bed, or perhaps lost in thought.
With his eyes closed, his senses became even sharper. Yao Wei could almost feel the faint body heat of the person near his arm resting on the bed. But before he could fully savor the sensation, a soft sigh was heard, and the person seemed to be about to leave. Startled, Yao Wei reached out and grabbed their wrist.
The move was so precise and abrupt that the figure froze, stopping in their tracks. In the darkness, a voice spoke: “You’re not asleep.”
That sudden movement had used a bit of force, aggravating the injury in his chest. Yao Wei was in so much pain that he wanted to grimace, but instead, he forced a smile and said, “If I were asleep, I wouldn’t have caught you. Brother Xuan, did you just arrive? Coming to see me in the middle of the night?”
Caught red-handed, Zeng Jingxuan remained silent for a moment before saying, “Let go.”
“I won’t.” Yao Wei couldn’t bear to let him leave and struggled to sit up from the hospital bed. However, a hand beat him to it, pressing him back down and simultaneously removing the hand that had grabbed his wrist, tucking it back under the covers.
“Doesn’t the wound hurt? Stay still.” Zeng Jingxuan’s tone wasn’t particularly gentle, but his movements were surprisingly careful. As if to reassure him, he even sat down on the bed across from Yao Wei.
Now Yao Wei was fully awake, and the smile on his face was impossible to hide. He glanced at himself lying in bed and then at Zeng Jingxuan sitting beside him, chuckling, “You know, this really reminds me of the first time we met. Brother Xuan, do you remember?”
Caught off guard by the sudden mention of the past, Zeng Jingxuan let out a soft laugh, “Back then, I wasn’t this pathetic, was I?”
But Yao Wei grinned, “Oh, I thought I was the pathetic one back then…”
Eight years ago
“So this is the guy you want me to tail?” Yao Wei picked up the photo on the table and scratched the stubble on his chin. He had been running this detective agency for two or three years now, and most of the cases he took involved catching cheating spouses or gathering evidence for divorce cases. It was rare to get a case where a fiancé wanted him to tail a potential homewrecker, let alone one as handsome as the man in the photo.
The bespectacled man in the suit sitting across from him looked furious, his face dark as he replied, “Xiao Yin must have been tricked by this guy! I secretly checked her phone, and she’s been in constant contact with him recently. Xiao Yin has always been a bit neurotic, and this guy must have taken advantage of her! Our families had already agreed to a wedding in October, and now is a critical time. We can’t let this bastard ruin our marriage!”
Honestly, just based on looks, the man in the photo was clearly more of a threat than you, Yao Wei thought with a smirk. He tapped the photo on the table and said, “I usually don’t take these kinds of cases, especially since you’re not officially married yet, Mr. Liang. You see…”
As if he had anticipated Yao Wei’s hesitation, the man sneered and slammed an envelope on the table, “This is the advance payment! First, find out who this guy is. If you get me the information, there’s a big reward waiting! But this has to be kept absolutely secret—Xiao Yin can’t find out. Hmph, I refuse to believe we can’t expose this pretty boy’s true colors!”
Yao Wei picked up the envelope and felt its thickness. There had to be at least fifty thousand yuan in there, and it was just the advance. This was clearly a rich idiot who was easy to take advantage of. Might as well make the most of it. With a grin, he pocketed the envelope and said, “Alright, let’s hear the details.”
The case wasn’t particularly complicated. This well-dressed Mr. Liang was a second-generation rich kid whose family ran a real estate company. He had managed to woo a young lady from a powerful political family, and after dating for over a year, they had announced their engagement two months ago, with the wedding planned for the end of the year.
Naturally, Mr. Liang was very invested in this marriage. However, for some reason, his fiancée had suddenly started acting cold toward him half a month ago. When he asked why, she avoided giving him a straight answer and started avoiding him altogether. Mr. Liang, of course, couldn’t rest easy and started digging around. He eventually discovered that a strange man had been visiting his fiancée’s house frequently. Concerned about his pride and worried that the woman he had worked so hard to win over might be stolen by this pretty boy, he decided to spend a large sum of money to hire a “professional” to uncover this rival’s secrets.
After listening to Mr. Liang’s angry explanation, Yao Wei raised an eyebrow, “So this guy is already staying at Miss Song’s villa?”
Mr. Liang’s face turned bright red, as if he had already been cuckolded. He shouted in response, “No! That villa is Xiao Yin’s private property, and it’s usually empty! I don’t know what the Song family is thinking, letting him stay there! I don’t care—just find out what he’s been doing at the Song family’s place these days. I want all the details!”
The man was practically foaming at the mouth, but Yao Wei just grinned, “Don’t worry, this isn’t too complicated. Leave it to me.”
