    Chapter Index

After dinner, Shen Fubai dragged Jiang Heng to the hospital, and Ye Lin couldn’t stop them even if he wanted to; he could only watch them leave with Ye Ziran. Shen Fubai asked Jiang Heng for his keys and went to the underground garage to fetch the car, driving it to the hospital. Both of them had their faces covered with scarves and hats, and in the middle of summer when everyone was dressed lightly, the sudden appearance of these two oddities on the street attracted attention. But there was no way around it; they would draw even more attention if they took off their hats and scarves.

In the hospital, people were hurrying about, and all sorts of strange individuals were present. Not many paid attention to these two who were dressed out of season. At most, young girls might glance at them a few times, somehow sensing that these two guys must be good-looking. Shen Fubai led Jiang Heng straight to the ENT department, urging him to go in for a check-up. Jiang Heng sighed, holding the temporary medical record and entering, treating it as a way to buy Shen Fubai’s peace of mind with money.

Capital city hospitals often received celebrities, and although doctors might be excited to see stars, they usually wouldn’t react too strongly or spread the news indiscriminately; it was a matter of professional ethics.

As Jiang Heng was inside getting checked, Shen Fubai sat outside waiting on a chair.

While waiting, he noticed that the people waiting beside and across from him seemed to be looking at him surreptitiously. Especially those few young girls, their gazes stuck to him as if uncertain. Shen Fubai was confident that he had covered his lower face thoroughly, and since he had been looking down at his phone, others couldn’t see the upper part of his face either. But just because they couldn’t see his face didn’t mean he wouldn’t stand out.

In the waiting area, there were two rows of chairs. On Shen Fubai’s side sat an old man, an old woman, a middle-aged man, and a pot-bellied middle-aged man. Across from them were three young girls, probably accompanying a friend to the hospital. One could imagine that in the eyes of these young girls, next to a row of old men, old women, uncles, and a big guy, the sudden appearance of a fair-skinned, slender-waisted, long-legged young man would be the most dazzling sight, even if his face wasn’t clearly visible.

Shen Fubai had an outstanding aura, and even the old man and woman beside him couldn’t help but look at him, thinking how nice it would be if their grandsons grew up to be as handsome. One girl had already raised her phone to secretly snap a photo to post on her social media, captioned with “Encountered a young man at the hospital, looks super handsome.”

Shen Fubai was incredibly sensitive to cameras. He could keenly sense a paparazzo’s lens eight hundred meters away, let alone this less skilled attempt at stealth photography from a girl.

He lowered his head, his brows furrowing slightly. Those girls didn’t seem to have recognized him—or perhaps they thought he looked similar but weren’t sure. If they posted the picture online and someone identified him, he wouldn’t have a good explanation for why he was in the hospital. A top-tier celebrity falling ill was a big deal, but Shen Fubai didn’t want to trend again.

Just as the girl was about to press the shutter button, Shen Fubai casually stood up, his one-meter-eight height instantly leaving the frame. Estimating that Jiang Heng would still be some time before coming out, he walked towards the other end of the corridor, wandering aimlessly.

The girl reluctantly put away her phone, sighing inwardly that handsome men could only be encountered by chance and couldn’t even be recorded in her photo album.

Shen Fubai wandered aimlessly and happened to see someone distributing masks. Wearing a medical mask in the hospital was almost commonplace—at least more so than wearing a scarf in summer. Shen Fubai took two masks, one for Jiang Heng. He walked to a corner, seeing that no one was around, untied the scarf, and put on the mask.

Now, he finally looked less strange.

His eyes were highly recognizable, a pair of beautiful almond-shaped eyes. Shen Fubai brushed back his bangs, slightly covering his eyes, making them appear less captivating. And it added an especially melancholic beauty to his demeanor.

Shen Fubai checked himself in front of a glass window, feeling quite satisfied.

Turning around, he intended to return to the ENT department, but at the corner of the corridor, he saw a familiar figure.

It was the student who worked part-time as a waiter.

For some reason, her eyes were red.

Was it true that someone in her family was really sick?

Li Ruowei was talking to a doctor, her tone somewhat agitated.

Shen Fubai had no intention of eavesdropping on someone’s privacy, but Li Ruowei was standing outside, and if he wanted to leave, he had to pass by her. He couldn’t just ignore her.

Li Ruowei was pleading with the doctor in a low voice, “Doctor, I know this amount isn’t enough, can you perform the surgery first… She has waited so hard for a suitable heart, we’ll find a way to pay later, we will definitely repay it!” The doctor looked helpless. “It’s not that I don’t want to, but the hospital has rules, and I can’t just give you the heart source. Besides, the patient’s family members have declined to sign for the surgery. You, as a classmate, have gone to great lengths, and you’re a good kid, but… sigh, it really can’t be done!” As the doctor spoke, he let out a long sigh and was about to leave.

“Doctor, Doctor!” Li Ruowei followed closely, grabbing the doctor’s white coat, her voice almost breaking into tears, “Can’t you make an exception… she could live…” but because… because of the lack of funds, the heart would rather remain unused in the hospital than be utilized for the patient.

Li Ruowei knew that hospitals weren’t charities, but emotionally, it was too difficult to bear. This feeling of watching an opportunity slip away while knowing that someone close to you could have lived was unbearable.

The doctor, unable to shake her off, said helplessly, “It’s no use finding me about this. You need to get her parents to discuss it with the director. Or, raise donations.”

“Donations…” Li Ruowei murmured, her hand slowly sliding off the doctor’s white coat, her eyes vacant. “Where can we raise donations…” Nowadays, there were many channels for fundraising, but few truly reached those in need. They had no connections, and even if they managed to raise a little, it would still fall far short of the surgery costs, let alone the subsequent recuperation expenses.

Her salary was merely a drop in the bucket, not even enough for medicine.

Seeing this, the doctor sighed again. Having worked in the hospital for so many years, he had seen countless lives and deaths and witnessed the full spectrum of human emotions.

As a classmate and friend, this child had already done enough.

As an ordinary doctor who needed to earn a living, he was powerless. No matter how much he wished the little girl would recover, he could only hope for the appearance of a kind-hearted person.

The doctor shook his head, planning to turn and leave, when he heard a pleasant male voice.

    “Doctor.”

“Hmm?” The doctor turned around and saw a youth who was half a head taller than him standing in front of him. Wearing a medical mask and dressed fashionably, his eyebrows and eyes were partially obscured by his hair, but he could still tell that he was a very good-looking young man.

The doctor found him somewhat familiar. But at his age, with such a busy job, he couldn’t recall who it was for a moment.

    Li Ruowei, however, was dumbfounded.

Being a loyal fan of Shen Fubai, it didn’t matter how shallow the disguise was—she would recognize Shen Fubai even if he turned to ashes!

Shen Fubai looked at Li Ruowei, “The friend you mentioned who needs surgery, is she the one you told me about, Wang Xiaoran?”

Li Ruowei nodded in surprise. She hadn’t expected that after mentioning her name once, Shen Fubai would actually remember.

“How urgent is the need for immediate surgery?” Shen Fubai asked.

Li Ruowei stammered, “Very, very urgent.”

Shen Fubai asked the doctor again, “Her guardians disagree?”

“The uncle and aunt love Xiaoran very much!” Li Ruowei quickly explained, “It’s just… they’ve spent too much money on this illness.” It wasn’t that they didn’t want to treat her, it was that they couldn’t afford it.

“Alright. Let me talk to her parents.” Shen Fubai lowered his gaze, his eyes slightly obscured by his bangs, “I’ll cover the expenses.”

The doctor was surprised, “Sir, her surgery fee is 500,000 yuan, and including follow-up treatment, it might reach 1 million…”

This young man looked like just a passerby, young enough to be a student. Although he was very enthusiastic, this sum of money wasn’t something anyone could easily afford.

“It’s just 1 million.” Shen Fubai lifted his gaze, “I’ll pay it.”

One million wasn’t a huge amount for him, equivalent to the price of a few clothes.

But it was also the value of a life.

Sometimes, this world… was unfair. Some were born into privilege, while others had nothing. Shen Fubai knew what it felt like to be short of money and also understood the feeling of suddenly receiving a glimmer of light from the depths of despair.

So when someone needed help and he was capable of providing it, he could also be that ray of light.

    Starlight –

The doctor was stunned by the generosity of this young man and scrutinized him carefully. He didn’t recognize many brands, but he had seen plenty of wealthy people in the hospital and could tell that this outfit was worth a lot.

That little girl was truly fortunate, to encounter a kind-hearted person like this.

“Alright, you’ll have to discuss this with her guardians,” the doctor said.

    Shen Fubai nodded.

The doctor nodded in acknowledgment, left with a stack of documents, still pondering over this kind-hearted young man.

There were never a shortage of evil people in the world.

But there were still more good people in the world –

Not long after the doctor left, Jiang Heng came over with a pile of reports, “Fubai.”

The place where Shen Fubai was wasn’t far from the ENT department, and Jiang Heng followed to find him, handing over the report sheets to Shen Fubai, “Nothing wrong.”

Shen Fubai glanced through them, indeed everything was normal.

“It’s good that there’s nothing,” Shen Fubai finally truly felt relieved.

He wasn’t being overly cautious. Even if Jiang Heng choked four times in one night, wasn’t Shen Fubai also careful about every red mark on his body, treating them as if they were deep wounds?

Ultimately, it was all due to concern, which made them both anxious over even minor things. If they truly didn’t care, then even death wouldn’t matter.

    Li Ruowei watched them curiously.

She assumed Shen Fubai had come to the hospital to check on his facial injury, after all, she had seen Shen Fubai’s injured face, and he was still wearing a mask now… A celebrity’s face was very important.

She didn’t dare ask too many questions. Instead, Jiang Heng asked her first, “Are you here to take care of a family member?”

“No,” Shen Fubai answered on behalf of Li Ruowei, “She’s here for a friend.”

Li Ruowei had indeed lied. No one in her family was sick; the one who was sick and urgently needed money was Wang Xiaoran.

She and Wang Xiaoran were high school classmates and best friends. Now that Wang Xiaoran had finally matched with a suitable heart donor, it was delayed due to lack of funds. The next opportunity was unknown, and Wang Xiaoran’s health was deteriorating day by day.

The Wang family had spent all their money on treating Wang Xiaoran since childhood, and they huddled together in a basement smaller than ten square meters, while Wang Xiaoran stayed in the hospital ward long-term.

If they left the hospital, something could happen to Wang Xiaoran at any time.

So who wouldn’t seize this opportunity? Heaven knew how many cigarettes Mr. Wang smoked when the parents couldn’t afford the surgery and how Mrs. Wang sobbed her heart out lying in bed.

Li Ruowei had no choice but to think of advancing some of her salary to cover the costs. Even if it was just a slight relief.

She and Wang Xiaoran were good friends, and initially, her family supported it, but as Wang Xiaoran’s illness worsened, her family disapproved of her visits, believing that constant interaction with a sick person brought bad luck.

But Li Ruowei was stubborn, determined to treat Wang Xiaoran as her best friend.
