Meanwhile, on the other side, at the Xu family’s company.
After arriving at the office, Xu Qingci headed straight into his private little office. But unlike usual, he didn’t immediately pick up the reports and contracts usually laid out on his desk this morning. Instead, he reached for a tablet on the side—one he had almost never used—unlocked it, then opened the browser and searched for Yan Yushan’s name.
A flood of news about Yan Yushan popped up instantly. Xu Qingci first clicked on the encyclopedia entry, quietly memorizing the long list of TV dramas and movies Yan Yushan had starred in, deciding he would watch them all when he had time. He then carefully read through the section about Yan Yushan’s family members and noticed there were no past relationships mentioned, which made him quietly happy.
After reading that, Xu Qingci opened Weibo and searched for Yan Yushan’s name, scrolling through some fan comments. When he saw lots of people calling Yan Yushan “husband” and saying things like they were already married, Xu Qingci’s face scrunched up in displeasure. With a pout, he angrily closed Weibo.
When the secretary walked in, she saw Xu Qingci pouting as he stared at some documents. Her heart skipped a beat, thinking there might be some serious issue with the company’s accounts.
“Xiao Tu… Young Master,” the secretary bent down and said to Xu Qingci, “President Xu said today’s business partner is very important and asked if you would like to sit in on the meeting.”
Xu Qingci nodded. “Yes.”
He didn’t need the secretary to carry him. He slid down from the chair on his own and landed steadily on the ground. As he walked out, he turned to the secretary beside him and asked, “Who is it?”
“It’s Yan Jingmo,” the secretary quickly replied, helping Xu Qingci open the door while muttering unintentionally, “This deal is really strange. We’re not even the best candidate for partnership…”
The moment he heard the name Yan Jingmo, Xu Qingci immediately thought of Yan Yushan. He remembered reading on the encyclopedia that Yan Yushan’s older brother was Yan Jingmo.
He was about to meet his uncle… or was it an older cousin? Xu Qingci thought about the proper term for a moment, a little torn. Even though the other party didn’t know yet that they were related by blood, Xu Qingci still felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. He tidied up his corgi hoodie, tugged at the little dog ears on the hood, and then walked into the meeting room with a serious expression. He was so serious that the secretary walking beside him nearly fainted from how cute he looked.
When Xu Qingci entered, the people on the Xu company’s side were used to it and greeted him with faint smiles, inviting him to sit on his exclusive high chair. On Yan Jingmo’s side, however, everyone looked surprised. Though they tried to hide their curiosity, their eyes kept drifting toward Xu Qingci, all wondering who he was.
Father Xu smiled proudly, with a hint of boastfulness. “This is my grandson, Xu Qingci. He’s three years old and very smart. He can understand our conversations and often joins me in business meetings.”
Xu Qingci calmly waved to the others around the table. “Hello, everyone.”
Seeing the adorable Xu Qingci, Yan Jingmo couldn’t help but smile, looking at him gently. After lowering his hand, Xu Qingci immediately turned his gaze across the table toward Yan Jingmo, and the two locked eyes.
Although he had never seen a photo of Yan Jingmo before, Xu Qingci recognized him instantly. Feeling the other’s warm and affectionate gaze, Xu Qingci couldn’t help but press his lips together shyly, a small dimple appearing as he smiled.
Uncle seems to really like him.
After that smile from Xu Qingci, the people Yan Jingmo brought along were also charmed by his cuteness, and several of them couldn’t help but smile. The atmosphere in the meeting room instantly became very pleasant. The following business discussion went smoothly, and the contract was soon finalized. Father Xu and Yan Jingmo both signed the agreement, stamped it, and then stood up to shake hands.
Yan Jingmo didn’t stay for lunch. He left the Xu company with his team, and once he was in the car, he kept thinking about Xu Qingci’s appearance. The more he thought about it, the more a faint sense of familiarity crept over him.
After a long moment of contemplation, he opened a chat and asked his mother for a childhood photo of him and Yan Yushan.
Mother Yan quickly sent over an old photo of the two of them as kids, asking why he suddenly wanted it. Yan Jingmo only said he felt like looking at it and he didn’t share the suspicion forming in his mind.
Staring at the photo, at young Yan Yushan’s sulky face, then comparing it with the Xu Qingci he had just seen, Yan Jingmo felt more and more certain that Xu Qingci’s eyebrows and nose resembled Yan Yushan’s. If it weren’t for the baby fat, the overall facial structure would be almost identical. The rest of his features clearly bore the traces of Xu Xishuang.
To put it simply, Xu Qingci looked very much like a child born from Xu Xishuang and Yan Yushan.
Yan Jingmo was startled by his sudden thought. He raised a hand to rub his temples, feeling that the idea was utterly absurd but his instincts and an unshakable gut feeling both told him that it might actually be true.
After thinking for a moment, Yan Jingmo opened his chat with Yan Yushan and sent a message: “Guess who I saw today?”
On the other end, Yan Yushan had just finished talking with Xu Xishuang and was in a great mood. Seeing the question from Yan Jingmo, he patiently replied, “Who?”
“Xu Qingci,” Yan Jingmo replied. “I sat at the same conference table with him discussing business. He’s really smart—he even asked a very important question about the contract.”
Yan Jingmo emphasized: “He’s only three.”
Yan Yushan: …
Yan Yushan: “He is very smart.”
With the setup complete, Yan Jingmo ran his fingers over his phone and typed to Yan Yushan: “I think Xu Qingci looks a bit like you when you were little. [Photo]”
Yan Jingmo forwarded the childhood photo their mother had sent. “Don’t blame me for overthinking. You know my intuition is usually spot on. I know this might sound ridiculous, but I really think Xu Qingci looks more like a child born from you and Xu Xishuang, rather than from Xu Xishuang and that foreign woman everyone talks about.”
Yan Yushan stared at the message Yan Jingmo had sent, emotions churning inside him before eventually settling into calm. He slowly and steadily typed a reply: “Ge, do you know what you’re saying?”
“Just pretend I’m talking nonsense,” Yan Jingmo replied, rubbing his temples again. “You’re right, after all—how could a man have a child? And there’s no medical technology yet that would let two men have a baby together…”
After ending the conversation with Yan Jingmo, Yan Yushan sat there staring at the messages for a long time. He looked over the childhood photo again and again, and kept recalling the moment he saw Xu Qingci that night. Clutching his phone tightly, he finally let out a long sigh.
Don’t overthink it.
It’s impossible.
The ringtone broke the silence. Seeing it was his manager Kong Xia calling, Yan Yushan answered the phone.
“Yan Yushan, I’ve got a variety show for you—want to give it a try?” Kong Xia got straight to the point. “You know the director, it’s Fei Yuan. It’s a livestream format and a game-based variety show. Just take it as a way to unwind.”
Ever since three years ago, Yan Yushan had gradually slowed down his work pace. From someone who used to spend all year working non-stop in Hengdian, he had become a normal person who would now take a few months off. But this year, his pace was unusually slow. He had only accepted one role, and had no plans for the second half of the year.
Kong Xia wasn’t trying to push Yan Yushan into working. In fact, she also hoped he would rest. After all, he had already won every award he could possibly win. After being so exhausted before, it was good for him to take a break now. Still, his unusually passive behavior had her worried, so she picked out a lighthearted variety show from the recent offers and mentioned it to him, hoping he would treat it as a way to relax.
“I don’t want to go,” Yan Yushan declined. “I have other things to take care of.”
Kong Xia paused for a moment. “Alright, forget it then. Fei Yuan’s filming location this time is set at A University. If you get recognized, it’ll probably cause a scene…”
“A University?” Yan Yushan suddenly interrupted. “I’ll go to the show.”
Kong Xia didn’t know why he suddenly changed his mind, but it was good news that he agreed to the variety show, so she didn’t press further. She immediately went to confirm with the director, Fei Yuan.
Because the variety show required confidentiality, Yan Yushan couldn’t tell Xu Xishuang in advance that he would be going to A University. He figured that once filming wrapped that day, he would stay nearby and naturally invite Xu Xishuang out for a meal.
That evening, Xu Xishuang also heard from Xu Qingci that he had met Yan Jingmo earlier that day.
Sitting on the sofa, Xu Qingci said softly to Xu Xishuang, “I think Uncle Yan is really amazing.”
“He looked at me for a long time today,” Xu Qingci added. “Before he left, he even patted my head and said I was really smart.”
Xu Xishuang didn’t think much of Yan Jingmo’s reaction. After all, since Xu Qingci was born, many people have praised him like that. Whether it was polite small talk or genuine admiration, it wasn’t unusual for someone like Yan Jingmo to compliment him.
The next few days passed peacefully. The number of people watching or approaching Xu Xishuang on campus decreased significantly. Once formal classes started, many outsiders could no longer enter the university. Without that external interference, the students at A University remained polite and reserved, making Xu Xishuang’s academic life much quieter.
In contrast to Xu Xishuang, Wen Han’s life was incredibly busy. As soon as he reported to school, his advisor pulled him straight into the obstetrics department at the hospital. He spent several days there assisting with numerous C-sections before finally being allowed to return and resume his research work.
As a token of appreciation, his advisor even arranged a private lab for him. Wen Han would be free to use it until he graduated.
Knowing Wen Han was back today, Xu Xishuang headed to the lab after class using the address Wen Han had given him, planning to ask him out for dinner.
When Wen Han got into his experiments, he often lost track of time and forgets to take care of his health. Xu Xishuang remembered how Wen Han had developed stomach issues from skipping meals, so he pulled out his phone and looked up a few restaurants. He chose one that offered both spicy and light dishes, quickly checked the reviews, and made a reservation.
Just as he finished booking the table, he saw a long string of messages from his younger cousin Xu Lu, mixed with a series of meaningless screams.
Xu Lu: “Oh my god oh my god, I really can’t believe how lucky I am! Turns out the reason I’ve never won even a single ‘try again bottle cap’ prize my whole life is because all my luck went into this one moment!”
Xu Lu: “Aaaaaaa I got picked to be an NPC aaaaahhh!”
Xu Xishuang: “? What kind of NPC?”
“An NPC in a variety show!” Xu Lu immediately sent a voice message, her voice lowered to keep herself from screaming. “It’s a live game-based variety show and my idol is in this episode too! One of the older fans in our group chat got insider info and told us. And now I’ve been chosen to be a secret contact NPC! That means I’ll have a chance to meet my idol face to face aaaaah this is just too amazing!!”
Xu Xishuang rested his index finger on the screen, recalling that Xu Lu’s idol was Yan Yushan. Which meant Yan Yushan was coming to their university to film a variety show?
Xu Lu kept spilling the beans like a flipped bamboo tube: “That sister in the fan group must be a staff member or something. She said the rules for this episode are really different. All the guests have to wear mascot costumes and they can’t show their faces or their voices. Then they have to approach random NPCs and ask for missions to complete. If you’re not a hardcore fan, you’d never recognize them, haha!”
“Gotta go, cousin, I’m off to get my mission now,” Xu Lu said hurriedly in a voice message. “I’m going to be on TV, hehe!”
By the time Xu Xishuang finished listening to the messages, he had already arrived at Wen Han’s lab. He knocked on the door, waited a few seconds, and then the door opened to reveal Wen Han in a white lab coat. Wen Han froze for a second when he saw him, then suddenly realized and gave an “Oh”.
“It’s dinner time already?”
“Not yet.” Xu Xishuang smiled. “I just came to remind you to take a break. Then we’ll head out together—by the time we get to the restaurant, it’ll be just about right.”
As he spoke, he followed Wen Han into the lab, carefully stepping around the equipment on the tables and making sure not to touch anything.
“How far along are you with the experiment?” he asked.
“Just starting,” Wen Han said with a wry smile. “Maybe not even that far.”
Wen Han was trying to study why his own genes allowed a man to have a child. To help, Xu Xishuang had also provided a few research samples—he had a tube of blood drawn for comparison. Since Xu Xishuang’s ability to bear children wasn’t genetic, Wen Han hoped to find a breakthrough from that angle.
But so far, he hadn’t discovered anything.
“It’s okay, no rush,” Xu Xishuang said, glancing at the notebook on the table, which was about an inch thick. “Professor Fred will be coming to China before long. Once he’s here, you two can resume your collaboration and maybe things will progress a bit faster.”
Wen Han nodded. “Yeah.”
As they talked, Wen Han had already taken off his lab coat and changed back into his everyday clothes. He turned off the machines that were still running, carefully packed up his samples, and checked everything in the lab to make sure it was in order. Then he gave Xu Xishuang a nod, and the two of them left the lab together, locking the door behind them and heading downstairs.
The lab building was located in a remote part of A University, a place where people rarely came. It was perfect for doing experiments without interruption. So as soon as Xu Xishuang and Wen Han stepped outside, they immediately saw a blue mascot costume standing in the open space out front. Beside the person in the mascot suit were two cameramen, each holding a camera.
Thinking of what Xu Lu had said, Xu Xishuang: …
Wen Han stared blankly as the blue mascot suddenly came rushing toward him and Xu Xishuang. He asked the figure, “Excuse me, are you…?”
Inside the blue mascot costume, Yan Yao couldn’t speak—she wasn’t allowed to break the rules. So she began waving her hands in a set of self-invented sign language, trying to explain to Xu Xishuang and Wen Han that she was filming a show and wanted to receive a mission from them.
While gesturing to the two of them, Yan Yao couldn’t help sneaking glances at Xu Xishuang again and again, thinking to herself how good-looking he was. After so many years in the entertainment industry, she had never seen someone this stunning. In this era where looks were everything, even if he didn’t blow up overnight, he could definitely become popular with just a bit of exposure. If he landed a representative role and acted in a few more dramas, it would only be a matter of time before he got famous.
At that moment, the thoughts of the livestream chat were almost identical to Yan Yao’s.
【Damn, this guy is way too good-looking. Does anyone know his name?!】
【He looks like he’s got a top-tier beauty filter on. He’s in a whole different league… Are we sure Nuwa wasn’t playing favorites when she made people? If he entered the entertainment industry, he’d definitely blow up overnight, right??】
【I know! His name is Xu Xishuang—didn’t he just trend on Weibo a few days ago?】
【So it’s all hype, huh? Trending last week, now showing up on a variety show as a “random passerby”… sounds like a setup for a comeback.】
【…Come on, it’s not that deep. He’s the young master of the Xu family—a rich second gen. Why would he need to fake-hype his way into the industry? Besides, he has already quit acting and is in school now.】
【I actually want him to make a comeback, sob. His acting in that idol drama was so good—he didn’t seem like a rookie at all. The senior he played is still my ideal campus crush, my one and only white moonlight!!】
Inside the mascot suit, Yan Yao was sweating profusely. She kept gesturing, but it was clear that neither of the two people in front of her understood what she was trying to say. Frustrated, she pulled back the round, stubby hands of her costume, full of regret—why on earth had she chosen the blue fat mascot? It didn’t even have fingers. She couldn’t gesture properly even if she tried.
Seeing the mascot stop moving, Xu Xishuang thought for a moment, then said to it, “I’m not sure what you’re trying to say, but we don’t have what you’re looking for here.”
Yan Yao froze for a second, then gave a dejected wave to Xu Xishuang and Wen Han before turning to leave.
She had barely taken a few steps when another guest appeared from the other end of the path. This one was dressed in a panda mascot suit, and the moment he saw Xu Xishuang, his pace suddenly sped up—he strode over quickly in their direction.
Seeing this new mascot approach, Yan Yao raised her hand and made a big “X” gesture, signaling that there was no task to be found here. But the panda mascot didn’t slow down at all. It was as if he either hadn’t seen her signal or didn’t believe it. He continued walking until he came to a stop directly in front of Xu Xishuang.
For some reason, the moment Xu Xishuang saw the panda mascot, he had a strange gut feeling—it was Yan Yushan.
When Yan Yushan stopped right in front of him, Xu Xishuang felt a little flustered, like he was suddenly meeting an online friend in real life after chatting for ages. He pressed his lips together and repeated what he had told Yan Yao earlier. “We don’t have what you’re looking for here.”
But the panda mascot didn’t leave.
Through the costume’s headpiece, Yan Yushan looked down at Xu Xishuang, his gaze briefly sweeping over Wen Han standing beside him.
He wasn’t sure what Xu Xishuang’s relationship was with the other person, so he stayed where he was. After thinking for a moment, he raised a hand and waved in greeting, then made an “H” shape with his fingers, followed by a gesture that suggested he was thinking.
Xu Xishuang immediately understood what Yan Yushan meant. He thought for a moment. “Are you looking for an H-shaped building?”
Yan Yushan nodded, and the round panda head bobbed along with him. Xu Xishuang couldn’t help but laugh a little. “Our law school building is shaped like that. Just leave here, walk straight, then turn left…”
The rest of Xu Xishuang’s sentence never made it out because Yan Yushan suddenly reached out and yanked him forward, pulling him in close in an instant. Then, before Xu Xishuang could react, Yan Yushan took off running with him.
At the far end of the path, the show’s “chaser” guest—dressed all in black—had just appeared. Yan Yushan wanted to get Xu Xishuang away as fast as possible, but he quickly remembered that Xu Xishuang wasn’t in good health and couldn’t handle intense movement. So without hesitation, he hooked an arm around Xu Xishuang’s waist, lifted him up with one hand, and practically slung him over his shoulder. Then he dashed into a nearby building, disappearing from sight.
Xu Xishuang: ?
Wen Han: ??
The cameraman who completely failed to keep up: ???
Yan Yao, who was caught by the chaser: ……
Bullet comments:
【??!?】
【Why did that guest just carry someone away??】
【Did the guest mistake Xu Xishuang for the show’s secret contact NPC or something? Maybe he was afraid the “bad guys in black” would catch him too, so he ran with him?】
【Anyone know who’s inside the panda mascot suit?!】
【Let’s use the process of elimination: we know the panda mascot is tall—even with the headpiece, he’s still clearly tall. There are five guests in this episode. First, we can eliminate Yan Yao and Bai Keke, both under 1.7 meters.】
【That leaves Liang Feng, Xiang Yao, and Yan Yushan. Among them, Xiang Yao is shorter. You can’t really tell body shape through the suit, but both Liang Feng and Yan Yushan fit the height and have the stamina. It’s between those two, folks.】
【I actually think it’s Brother Yan… Liang Feng has a girlfriend, doesn’t he?】
【I think it’s Liang Feng because he has a girlfriend. That proves he’s straight, right? So he could carry off a pretty boy like that without hesitation. Well but if it were Brother Yan… hmm…】
If the person inside the panda mascot suit was really Yan Yushan, then the act of carrying Xu Xishuang away like that suddenly felt a little thought-provoking.
Hidden behind the door, Xu Xishuang blinked. He looked at the panda mascot, now very close to him, listened to the slightly rushed breathing coming from within the suit, and thought of the man in black who had chased after them earlier. He more or less understood what had happened.
Before the cameraman could catch up, Xu Xishuang asked in a low voice, “Yan Yushan?”
Inside the panda suit, Yan Yushan froze for a second. He hadn’t figured out how Xu Xishuang had recognized him, but that didn’t stop a smile from forming on his lips. “Mm, it’s me.”
The deep voice so close to his ear made Xu Xishuang’s ears tingle. He instinctively leaned back a little. “I’m really not one of the show’s assigned NPCs. You’ve got the wrong person.”
Yan Yushan quickly replied, “But didn’t you give me directions? Thank you.”
Of course, he knew Xu Xishuang wasn’t a designated contact from the production team. He just wanted to spend a little more time with him.
“It’s nothing,” Xu Xishuang said, unable to help reaching up and rubbing his ear.
Noticing the faint blush on the tip of Xu Xishuang’s ear, something stirred in Yan Yushan’s chest. He recalled the “pitiful act” strategy he had learned from Liang Feng, lowered his voice even further, and said in an intentionally pathetic tone, “All the other guests who didn’t get caught have already found their tasks but I haven’t gotten a single one.”
Xu Xishuang was silent for a second, then asked Yan Yushan, “In this kind of game variety show, is there some kind of punishment if you lose?”
When he was bored, he would watch a few variety shows himself. Some of them had pretty “severe” punishments for losing.
“The punishment is no dinner,” Yan Yushan said, still pitifully, “I have to post an ugly photo of myself on Weibo, tell an embarrassing story that no one knows, and pin it to the top for a whole week—no deleting allowed.”
